Lorraine Castillo, Wine Director & General Manager

A passion for all things Italian is something that comes naturally for Lorraine. Lorraine, who grew up in the suburbs outside of Los Angeles, studied in Florence during her junior year of college and threatened to never leave. After college, she headed to San Francisco and was captivated by the thriving food and wine scene. It was her exposure to the Italian food and wine culture fostered during those months abroad that gave Lorraine motivation for introducing Bay Area guests to the pleasures of the Italian table.

She returned the States, enrolled in Italian language class, and set out to increase her formal wine knowledge. She says the Piemonte region of Italy inspires her most because each hillside expresses such a distinct terroir.

Lorraine got her start in food at age twelve, working for the catering company that her parents owned. After college she moved to San Francisco and took her first restaurant job at Cobalt Tavern. She joined the opening Ottimista team as a server in 2005, and slowly gravitated toward the wine side of the business. In early 2008 Lorraine became GM of the restaurant with an active role in the wine program, and made her first VinItaly journey that spring. She took over as Wine Director in December 2008. Today her list reflects a strong respect for the traditional, old-world winemaking style, and the desire to discover and introduce guests to unique and interesting Italian wines.
