The Setting:
At this recently opened hot spot, a few seats on the enclosed patio and a long leather banquette entice passers-by into a rustic space where walnut
tables and a marble-topped bar invite nibbling and sipping. The wall opposite the bar is covered in textured plaster, with portraits of cofounder
Melissa Gisler's Italian ancestors mounted in antique frames. A mural depicting a map of Europe is displayed on the back wall above wooden wine racks,
while empty wine barrels double as cocktail tables near the bar.
The flavor:
More than half the selections on the 250-bottle wine list hail from Italy's northern regions, with the remainder coming from the U.S., France, Spain,
Germany and South America. More than 30 are available by the glass. Gisler's business partner, wine director Jerad Ruhl, describes his selections as
"acid driven" and "food friendly." Chef Mark Young's Mediterranean cuisine, served on small and large plates, includes such delights as
olives baked
in an asiago cheese pastry crust, meat and pasta entrées, and fun desserts like ricotta doughnuts with nutmeg sugar.
